On Board Air IndiaOne, Sep 12: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today admitted there was a need to strengthen the country"s intelligence set-up and investigative systems to ensure that incidents like Friday"s blasts in Malegaon did not recur.'"We have to strengthen our intelligence set-up. Once events take place, we have to strengthen our investigative methods.
There is a problem, I do not deny that,'" he told journalists accompanying him on his nine-day visit to Brazil and Cuba.
Dr Singh said the agencies concerned were doing their best but there was ‘"considerable scope for improvement,'" particularly in strengthening intelligence gathering at the grassroot level.
The Prime Minister also called for strengthening coordination in this regard among the states and also between them and the Centre.
He pointed out that it was in this context that he had convened a meeting of Chief Ministers recently to discuss internal security.
‘"All these things require a structured approach,'" he stressed.
Asked about progress in the investigations, Dr Singh said it would be inappropriate, at this stage, to ‘"rule anything out or rule anything in.'" ‘"I think there should be a fair investigation which inspires confidence and brings out the truth and nothing but the truth without any pre-conceived notions. That has to be the objective,'" he added.

Malegaon, Sep 10: One person was today arrested in connection with the Malegaon blasts and the police will soon release the sketches of the other suspects.
The police had identified the shop from where the brand new bicycles used in the Friday serial bomb blasts were purchased.
Meanwhile, the situation in the communally sensitive powerloom town has improved remarkably.
Police had earlier detained ten other people for questioning.
At least 38 people were killed and nearly 150 injured in the four blasts that rocked the city on Friday.
Investigation indicate that the bombs were time-bombs and were manufactured indigenously. Apart from the four which exploded, the police also defused two live bombs which were found in Kabrastan.
Malegaon, a city situated on the Mumbai-Agra highway has a population of about seven lakh people out of which nearly 75 per cent are of the minority community.
Five kg RDX was seized from this town in May along with several AK 47 rifles and other ammunition. UNI
How the bicycle had turned to motor-bike, Mohammedans turned to Hindus, that too a Hindu-woman-Sanyasi?
Can the earlier investigation be forgotten just ike that?

Purohit had 60 kg of RDX: ATS by Rahi GaikwadNashik: Lieutenant-Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit, a serving Army officer and a key suspect in the Malegaon blast of September 29, had 60 kg of RDX in his possession while he was in the Army’s Deolali camp in 2006, Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) special prosecutor Ajay Misar told the Nashik court here on Friday. He was seeking Purohit’s remand extension.Calling Purohit a “mastermind,” Mr. Misar argued that portions of the RDX were used in Malegaon and the Samjhauta Express blast of 2007.“It has been learnt that some portion of the RDX was given to a person named Bhagwan, to be used in the Samjhauta blast. Some of it was used for Malegaon blast. However, this aspect is yet to be investigated. It will come to light over the next three days,” he said.
The laptop of Purohit has been traced and sent for forensic analysis.
The forensic report of October 3, 2008, states RDX was used in the Malegaon blast. “A huge quantity was used,” said Mr. Misar. The explosive was found in 18 spots after the blast. However, it is not confirmed whether it is military grade RDX.

Some of it was used for Malegoan blast. However, this aspect is yet to be investigated. It will come to light over the next three days"!

NASHIK: Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit, accused in the Malegaon blasts case had “custody” of 60kg of RDX procured from Jammu and Kashmir, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Saturday told a Nashik court while seeking an extension of Purohit’s custody. Senior division civil judge HK Ganatra granted this extension till November 18.
A witness, whose identity is protected under section 44 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, allegedly told the ATS that Purohit is “kattar Muslim dharm virodhi (strongly against Islam)”, revealed special public prosecutor, Ajay Misar in court.
“When Purohit was posted in Deolali in 2006, he confessed before this witness that he was in custody of 60kg of RDX. He showed the witness a green haversack with the RDX,” said Misar in court.
Purohit also allegedly told this witness that he got the RDX from Jammu " Kashmir.
“Whether or not it was procured from an army operation or taken from the army office itself is still not known,” said Misar.
As per the ATS probe, Purohit gave two contradictory statements regarding what happened to the RDX. “In one statement he said that he threw it in the Jhelum river. In another, he said that it was to be deposited in the army headquarters but didn’t do it,” said Misar. When asked if the same RDX allegedly in Purohit’s custody was used in the Malegaon blasts, Misar said that the police is probing that angle. The ATS will probe whether Purohit is still in custody of some RDX, said Misar.
RDX traces were found in 18 locations around the blasts site near the SIMI office, as per forensic evidence collected by the ATS
Purohit was produced with his face covered before the civil judge. When asked if he had any complaints from the ATS, he said he didn’t. His lawyer, Avinash Bhide opposed the police custody saying that the information given by Misar in court has not been recorded in the remand application. He also alleged that Purohit has been assaulted by the investigating agency and that he should be sent for a medical check-up. This application was rejected by the court.
The scenes around the Nashik court where Col Purohit was produced were that of a fortress. Around 1.30 pm, the police had gathered in large numbers manning the areas around the Central Bus Station where the court is, and the road along the court premise was lined by white police jeeps. A unit of SRPF was also posted in the vicinity of the court. In a show of strength, an estimated 1500 activists of Hindu Rashtra Sena, led by its founder Dhananjay Desai holding saffron flags and shouting slogans of ‘Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji’, ‘Col Purohit agae badho, hum tuhmare saath hain’ marched on the road in front of the court.
The police arrested up more than 300 supporters of Hindu Rashtra Sena including its leader Dhananjay Desai. Later, Desai said, “The investigation is all designed to malign the image of the ex- servicemen, serving army officers and Hindu leaders. How can you term someone anti nationalist, even before he is proved? We are here to show our support to Col Purohit,” he stated. |

Train cloud on colonel

Mumbai, Nov. 15: Arrested army officer Shrikant Prasad Purohit sourced over 60kg of RDX during his stint in Jammu and Kashmir and may have provided a part of it for use in explosions in Malegaon and aboard the peace train Samjhauta Express, investigators said in court today.
The revelation came when the Maharashtra anti-terrorist squad (ATS) produced the lieutenant colonel before the Nashik chief judicial magistrate for further remand.
ATS counsel Ajay Misar claimed that a Malegaon blast witness had quoted Purohit as saying he had procured 60kg of RDX during his stint in Jammu and Kashmir in 2006 and that he gave a part of it to a man named Bhagwan.
The ATS, Misar said, suspects that portions of the explosive material may have been used in last year’s Samjhauta Express blasts and in the September 29 Malegaon explosion.
On February 18, 2007, the peace train between India and Pakistan had been rocked by twin blasts near Panipat in Haryana, killing 68 people.
A team of Haryana railway police is currently in Mumbai to interrogate Purohit.
However, sources in the Forensic Sciences Laboratory at Madhuban in Haryana, which analysed evidence from the Panipat site, said the explosive device was made up of potassium chlorate, carbon and sulphur along with diesel or petrol and magnesium wires. No RDX was used, they added.
Misar claimed Purohit had told the ATS he had thrown the RDX into the Jhelum, but the investigations indicated he had managed to transport the explosive material to his next posting in military intelligence at Deolali in Nashik.
Describing Purohit as one of the four masterminds of the Malegaon explosion that killed five persons, Misar said the ATS had found evidence linking the officer with sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Kanpur-based religious leader Swami Amritanand alias Dayanand Pandey. He said Pandey had introduced Purohit to Malegaon bomb planter Ramji Kalsangra, who is absconding.
The court dismissed applications filed by the defence alleging illegal detention and torture in ATS custody. Purohit has been remanded in police custody till November 18
