Mumbai, Nov. 15: Arrested army officer Shrikant Prasad Purohit sourced over 60kg of RDX during his stint in Jammu and Kashmir and may have provided a part of it for use in explosions in Malegaon and aboard the peace train Samjhauta Express, investigators said in court today.
The revelation came when the Maharashtra anti-terrorist squad (ATS) produced the lieutenant colonel before the Nashik chief judicial magistrate for further remand.
ATS counsel Ajay Misar claimed that a Malegaon blast witness had quoted Purohit as saying he had procured 60kg of RDX during his stint in Jammu and Kashmir in 2006 and that he gave a part of it to a man named Bhagwan.
The ATS, Misar said, suspects that portions of the explosive material may have been used in last year’s Samjhauta Express blasts and in the September 29 Malegaon explosion.
On February 18, 2007, the peace train between India and Pakistan had been rocked by twin blasts near Panipat in Haryana, killing 68 people.
A team of Haryana railway police is currently in Mumbai to interrogate Purohit.
However, sources in the Forensic Sciences Laboratory at Madhuban in Haryana, which analysed evidence from the Panipat site, said the explosive device was made up of potassium chlorate, carbon and sulphur along with diesel or petrol and magnesium wires. No RDX was used, they added.
Misar claimed Purohit had told the ATS he had thrown the RDX into the Jhelum, but the investigations indicated he had managed to transport the explosive material to his next posting in military intelligence at Deolali in Nashik.
Describing Purohit as one of the four masterminds of the Malegaon explosion that killed five persons, Misar said the ATS had found evidence linking the officer with sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Kanpur-based religious leader Swami Amritanand alias Dayanand Pandey. He said Pandey had introduced Purohit to Malegaon bomb planter Ramji Kalsangra, who is absconding.
The court dismissed applications filed by the defence alleging illegal detention and torture in ATS custody. Purohit has been remanded in police custody till November 18

Samjhauta blasts case: ATS contradicting itself by CNN-IBN

New Delhi: While the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) may be declaring victory over alleged confessions of Malegaon blast accused, Lt Col Purohit, many of the ATS’s revelations in the past few days seem to contradict other investigations.
Though ATS officials say Lt Col Purohit supplied explosives for other blasts, including those on board the Samjhauta Express, the Chandigarh Forensic Science Laboratory said very minor traces of RDX were found in the Samjhauta blasts case - even though the Special Investigation Team of the Haryana Police categorically claimed RDX was used.
Also, what is not clear is where the RDX actually came from. The Maharashtra ATS has now backtracked on its claim that RDX sourced from the Army was used in the train blasts. The ATS has clarified that it was investigating where the RDX “pilfered from the Army” was used.
Meanwhile, Special Public Prosecutor, Ajay Misar says facts will be proven only after thorough investigation.
“Large amounts of RDX was recovered from Purohit. Whether the same was used for Samjhauta blasts will be revealed in the investigations. It was also found that Rs 25,000 were given to a builder in Nashik. We don’t know what the purpose of that was.”
“Purohit gave part of the 60 kg RDX that he had to Bhagwan and the ATS is probing the possibilities of where all this RDX could have been used. It may not have anything to do with Samjhauta blasts,” Misar added.

Army debunks ATS claim that Purohit sourced RDX by CNN-IBN

UNIFORM HUMILIATED: Purohit has been grilled by the ATS for his alleged role in Malegaon and Samjhauta Express blasts
New Delhi: While the ATS may be declaring victory over alleged confessions of Lt Col Purohit, the Indian Army insiders point out that the ATS version of events has several holes.
The ATS claim that Purohit sourced RDX from the Army’s stock is debunked by the Army.
The Indian Army is not known to use or store RDX, say sources. The explosives used by the Army are TNT and plastic explosives (PEK).
Also, explosives seized by the Army in Jammu and Kashmir are either destroyed on the spot or handed over to the police.
Besides, 60 kg of RDX is a huge quantity of explosives. If such a large quantity of explosives goes missing while in the Army’s holds, it would become a subject matter of a major inquiry.
Lt Col Srikant Prasad Purohit was a Major when he was posted in Kashmir as a Military Intelligence officer and that is too low a position to manipulate such huge quantities of explosives.
Also, seizures, in any case are effected by infantry and never by intelligence personnel. Purohit was never imparted, nor did he acquire any expertise in bomb making in the Army.
Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Lt Col Purohit could have sourced RDX from Army stores, say sources.

ATS EXPOSED:
WHEN INESTIGATINS DONE WITH MOTIVE, NATURALLY LIES WOULD BE THERE.
THAT TOO, WHEN HYPOTHETICAL ACCUSATIONS ARE MADE, THERE WOULD BE NO TRUTH.
FOR THE SAME CRIME COMMITTED, THE SAME ATS CANNOT HAVE TWO OFFENDERS ONE JIHADI GROUP AND ANOTHER HINDU.
ATS retracted RDX claim under pressure

MUMBAI: It was pressure from an embarrassed Centre which forced the ATS to go back on its charge that 60 kg of RDX allegedly pilfered by Lt Col Prasad Purohit was used in the Samjhauta Express blast last year. Even though the ATS’ public prosecutor Ajay Misar had told the Nashik court on Saturday that the RDX allegedly stolen by Lt Col Prasad was used in the Samjhauta blast, on Sunday the ATS claimed that he has been misquoted by the media.( Watch )
Soon after Misar made the sensational charge in Nashik, the intelligence bureau (IB), which is keeping a close tab on the probe, alerted the Centre about the implications of Misar’s statement. When the train blast took place, the Centre had blamed Pakistan’s ISI for the terror strike on the basis of the bureau’s findings.
“But the ATS’ charge on Friday would have seriously impaired the Centre’s credibility internationally. The central government has been informing its counterparts in the US and other countries about the role of the ISI and here the ATS was claiming that the blast was the handiwork of a serving Indian Army officer. Forensic examination of the blast site and two unexploded bombs had conclusively proved that RDX was not used, but the ATS was levelling an allegation to the contrary,” a senior bureau official observed.
Meanwhile, the Centre is believed to have commended the Mumbai crime branch’s investigation of the Indian Mujahideen’s role in the Ahmedabad, Delhi and Mumbai 7/11 blasts.
Crime branch sleuths had arrested 20 persons and got their confessions about their alleged role in various blasts. Then human right activists, minority leaders et al were allowed to meet the accused persons without police presence and make inquiries. All those who met the accused came out with the unanimous conclusion that the accused persons were not tortured and had voluntarily confessed to their role in 7/11 and other blasts.
